OUTDOOR EDUCATION FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS

Overview

Today's competitive academic environment puts increasing demands on students to spend greater amounts of time in the classroom, and very little time outdoors. Outdoor education develops life skills that cannot be gained in the classroom and contributes significantly to their personal all-round development. Research in the West has proved that outdoor experiences actually strengthen academic learning. Outdoor programmes instil in students a sense of responsibility, assist in building trust, self-confidence and a strong sense of team spirit. Additionally, a lasting benefit of outdoor learning is that students learn to enjoy and respect the environment and also to care for it.

Education/Training Programmes

  • Basic outdoor education courses
  • Adventure courses
  • Hiking and camping - surviving in the outdoors
  • Wilderness experiences
  • Exploration of historically important caves and forts
  • Combination ventures

Practical Details

  • Minimum group size - 20 students
  • Quality over quantity. It is advisable that maximum group size should not exceed 40, so that those who join up, get the most out of their trip
  • All trips are customised to meet the needs of a particular group or school
  • Slide show, talk and questions and answer session with students, teachers and parents, can be arranged if requested
  • Ventures settings can vary from a base camp with basic amenities and facilities to total outdoor wilderness locations

Student Group Composition

While group composition is left to the institution concerned, we have in the past worked with the following age groups and designed modules to suit their specific needs, requirements and capabilities:

Std. 5 & 6 - Approximate age 10 to 12 years

Std. 7 & 8 - Approximate age 12 to 13.5 years

Std. 9 & 10 - Approximate age 13.5 to 15.5 years

Duration and Costs

DURATION - Ideally a student group should spend at least three days and two nights out to benefit from the experience. Courses vary from two day training programmes to week long ones. Dates around holiday periods get full early, so do book your dates as soon as possible.

COSTS - Costs vary according to many factors - originating destination, season, group size, group composition, location, special needs and activities being organised.
